Leave a Legacy

Leave a Legacy

No matter how big or small, leaving a gift in your will can help us give members and their families the support they need.

Every year hundreds of members find themselves facing unexpected challenges and turn to us for help. It can be anyone from early career starters to retirees, dealing with problems as diverse as health issues to financial concerns. Without someone to turn to, their future is uncertain. This is why we believe in the power of our community to protect our community.

No matter how big or small, leaving a gift in your will can help us give members and their families the support they need. Below is some useful information and wording you can use.

If you have decided to leave a gift in your will to CIOB Assist, we’d love for you to tell us so that we can say thank you.

I am currently having regular CBT therapy sessions provided by Anxiety UK through CIOB Assist/Benevolent Fund and I am finding it extremely beneficial. I am so glad I asked for the help as it’s enabled me to get back on track to a normal life.

Finding a solicitor

Making or changing your will is simple if you have the right professional help. To find a solicitor in the UK you can visit the relevant Law Society.

England or Wales: solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk or telephone 020 7320 5650.

Scotland: lawscot.org.uk

Northern Ireland: https://www.lawsoc-ni.org/

Inheritance tax

Gifts in your will to registered charities are free of inheritance tax (IHT). So, if the value of your estate is more than the tax threshold, a gift to charity could reduce the burden of IHT. Also, if you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, this can reduce the rate of IHT from 40% to 36% on some assets. For more information about IHT go to www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax

Keep your will safe

Sadly, wills get lost or mislaid over time. To ensure your wishes are carried out we recommend that you leave the original copy of your will with your solicitor. You can register your will with the National Will Register, for a small fee. See www.nationalwillregister.co.uk for further details.
