COVID-19 and its impact on Employment: Supporting those out of work

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on employment across the UK. The employment rate has hit its joint lowest rate since 2017, with the younger and older generations the worst affected. Some workers have been disproportionally economically impacted by the pandemic. Those from an ethnic minority group, women, young workers, low paid workers and disabled workers, have been most negatively economically affected.

The construction industry has been one of the hardest hit sectors. According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of people employed in construction fell by 83,000 in the second quarter of 2020. Many firms have faced financial difficulty and liquidity challenges have led to widespread redundancies.

Unemployment has several societal and economic impacts. It can cause individuals to have to face a number of challenges due to reduced income and can lead to both physical and mental health issues. If you or someone you know are experiencing mental health difficulties due to COVID-19, take a look at our blog on this issue for help and advice.

Through the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, launched on 20 April 2020, 11.4 million employee jobs have been furloughed up to the 15 March 2021. This initiative has undoubtably significantly lessened the blow of COVID-19 on unemployment, but unfortunately the impact has still been far-reaching, and many are without a job and finding it difficult to get another.

Construction was among the industries showing the largest percentage decrease in the number of vacancies in the three months to May 2020, with 54% fewer jobs available. (ONS, 2020).

The Government has provided guidance for those who have lost their job as a result of COVID-19. This is a very helpful resource, advising on financial issues and getting back into work.
